To Help You This Season

From an article by Rich Salvaggio, AIFD, AAF, PFCI

Candles can illuminate your designs. The addition of a simple candle can add variety to your design and help create a unique item.

They provide:

  • Additional Color
  • Ambiance and Romance
  • Aroma

Follow these suggestions for candle safety:

  • Surround the base of the candle or the holder with aluminum foil.
  • Square of the bottom of the candle for stability.
  • Use commercial, plastic candleholders with a point on the bottom to be inserted into the floral foam

Helping You Control Costs

SAF’s new online worksheet can help you control the cost of your goods sold, your profitability. Sten Crissey, AAF, Crissey Flowers, Seattle, helped develop the easy-to-use worksheet because “it’s important to maximize operating margins” in this “highly competitive market.”  The worksheet is free to SAF members at http://www.safnow.org

Newspaper ColumnDid you know that a column gets higher readership than the typical display ad, yet uses only 8" of space? Words and Roses offers florists the opportunity to have a weekly column featuring stories and anecdotes from their shop in a local newspaper without having to do any writing. For a small weekly fee, they do the writing for you and you get the exposure. For more information, check out their website at Wordsandroses.com or call them at 503-591-7978.

A Business Reminder

Return on Investment:

Net Profit Before Tax
Net Worth

Indicates the percent of return on funds invested in the business.

Gross Margin:
Gross Profit
Sales

Measures the percentage of revenue remaining after subtracting cost of goods sold.

Inventory Management:
Costs of Goods Sold   =   Inventory
Inventory                         Turnover

Number of Days in Period   =   Inventory
Inventory Turnover                   Turnover Days

This will tell you how you’re managing your inventory. Every time your inventory turns, you should be making a profit.

Quote of the Month

As tools become rusty, so does the mind: a garden uncared for soon becomes smothered in weeds; a talent neglected withers and dies.
